What type of dress to wear for my boyfriend’s sister’s wedding?

So I don’t ever dress up– and haven’t owned/wore a dress since prom, don’t own any jewelry, or heals… I’m so lost as to what’s in style, or what sort of dresses to wear to a wedding (the last wedding I was in was my sisters in 1996, and since I was a bridesmaid I didn’t have to worry about a dress). It’s in September, she’s having 2 weddings, one is very fancy with her future husband’s family, and the other one is going to be a more casual wedding in a rural setting (where she’s from). Her future husbands family has mega bucks (they’re in the pharmaceutical business). I’m a college student, so I want to spend like $50 or less on the entire thing, dress, shoes, and accessories… any suggestions?
I’m going to both– I’m going to wear the same dress to both, that’s why I wanted something that could go either way. I don’t have the $$ to buy 2 dresses lol.

A dress that is knee length, neutral colored (not white or any other light color that might come close), broad strapped (about three fingers width) and higher collared (nothing below 4-5 fingers below the collar bone) is acceptable. You can pair it with a sweater or jacket of a brighter hue for the formal affair, and wear it solo for the casual.
Jewelry can make or break a look. Too big, brightly colored or extremely cheap looking will make you look very young and unsophisticated. Use jewelry that isn’t delicate, but isn’t over the top. Pearls are a nice touch, crystal will work with most anything. Stick to more sophisticated jewelry. Borrow something from your mother or older sister (if you have one).
Shoes should match either the dress or the jacket or be a complimentary color. Bright colored shoes should only be worn if they match the jacket. Stick with low heeled shoes, black is always a good choice, yet again, steer clear of white.
Make up should be light, with perhaps a shade of lipstick or eyeshadow that is complimentary to attire. For example, if you choose a black dress with a red jacket, play up your eyes with a soft charcoal shade.
Look around places like Deb Shops, JC Penney’s, Sears or Gap for the attire. They usually carry what is in style or close enough to it. Deb Shops tends to be more price savvy than the others, they also have sales on things all the time, sell jewelry and shoes as well as clothing.
For jewelry either borrow it (vintage jewelry is always in style, the older the better, so maybe even Grandma?), or check out places like Claire’s.
For shoes, Payless never fails. Some people say it’s tacky, but on a budget, it is perfect.
