Tips on Creating a Custom Engagement Ring

Once you decide to propose or have been proposed to, your head will begin to spin on how to choose from hundreds if not thousands of diamonds and ring designs.  There are fantastic new engagement ring styles being made everyday and some of them even have matching wedding bands. Many couples travel from jewelry store to jewelry store in search of the best engagement rings and wedding bands only to be disappointed when they find that nothing is perfectly suits their tastes or if it does it is out of their price range.  It is when they do a google search or through a recommendation from a friend that a custom engagement ring or wedding band is the answer!

The main problem with custom jewelry is that you may not have a real sample to look at.  My experience with a custom jeweler was actually like this.  However, he told me to go look at all the magazines and pictures I could to find the design I wanted.  Then, come back to look at the types of loose diamonds he had available to see which would mount the best and be in the right price range.  Although most people have a difficult time visualizing the final finished product, I found it to be a fun process.

An experienced and professional jeweler will have all the skills to make a ring exactly as shown in almost any illustration you find.  He would also be able to tell you if it is in style or if it will suit your tastes given your age.  A custom jeweler wants you to be happy because he depends on you for referral business.  The bottom line is you must communicate what you want to a custom jeweler to get exactly what you want for a predetermined price.  Wedding bands are a little simpler because the overall cost is lower than an engagement ring and men are less picky as well.  When choosing someone to create your engagement ring, make sure to discuss the price of the final product as well as payment terms beforehand.

Although most custom jewelers work alone, sometimes you may be speaking with the sales agent or designer.  The designer might be able to help you visualize the final product as well as to promise a wonderful job, but the designer may have several craftsmen that work for him or her.  If this is the case, make sure to arrange a meeting with the craftsmen as well to discuss the concept and final design.

Great craftsmen and custom jewelers and make diamonds look much better than their GIA grading would suggest by hiding imperfections and making diamonds appear larger.  Poor ones, on the other hand may set diamonds poorly or weld metal improperly. This can result in an engagement ring that doesn’t look as good or even a diamond that could potentially fall out of the setting.  Credentials such as the Jewelers of America (JA) Master Jeweler program could help you lessen this risk, but the only other way is asking previous clients of theirs for their thoughts and impressions.

The process of which your concept becomes a completed engagement or wedding ring is a multi-step process.  The craftsmen would make and carve a wax prototype of your prospective wedding ring design based on illustrations and pictures that you have shown them. For a completely original design, the designer would actually have sketches drawn.  He or she can also create special features in your design that will make any two rings look like they were made for each other, like two sides of a heart.  Special features can include methods of diamond setting, precious metal types, profiles, heights, widths, engravings and side stones.

After the any changes are made and you approve the wax prototype, a jeweler will make mold of the wax. The wax prototype is placed in a bowl or container and then filled with plaster.  As the plaster hardens, the container is placed into oven and the wax prototype melts and what is left is the mold for the molten metal to be pored into.  The container is then filled with a molten metal and once the metal cools the plaster broken off to reveal the final casting of the ring.  The casting is then polished, filed and cleaned up.

The steps mentioned above is the traditional way of creating a diamond ring.  New technologies are available using imaging technology, but the most delicate and unique designs today are still done by traditional methods.  Many ring designs seen in stores that are mass produced use 3D technology.
