Anyone who is interested in starting or enhancing a children’s boutique business shouldn’t be without this guide. If you are buying from domestic wholesalers, if you are not getting your product because your domestic suppliers aren’t supplying, if you are tired of being controlled by your supplier, you need to get on board and take charge of your businesses success!
I started my business in 2003 with the intention of supplementing my income. I had no idea that my hobby would explode over night. Within a few short months, I saw huge potential in right in front of me and harnessed it without hesitation.
I took my little tutu business to the next level and began importing. I saw the way fellow crafters were looking at me while doing craft shows. I saw the way mom’s were calculating my sales volumes at the shows and I suddenly became protective of my niche. I knew that the crafter’s and mom’s were going to try to duplicate everything I had going for me and if this was the case, I HAD to be the one they would find in search results. I knew they’d go to the internet and try to find my sources. Fortunately at that time, there were only a handful (at most) of manufacturers producing these products. My main supplier didn’t even advertise online (and they still don’t as a matter of fact).
I was right…..that gut feeling! I was perfectly zeroed in on what was going to happen. I immediately launched a wholesale fairy princess website, offering over 300 items for sale: tutus, fairy dresses, formal children’s dresses, fairy wings, wands, hair accessories, shoes, slippers, pettiskirts, jewelry, room decor…you name it!
The business exploded. It became international overnight (quite literally) and I had a full-fledged importing company, warehouse, and shipping department. It provided a lucritive income stream with single sales ranging from $100.00 up to $12,000.00. We lead the industry and paved the way for what is a trillion dollar industry today.
Many of the companies that exist today in the girlie-girl princess industry have been influenced by our company whether they realize it or not. It’s funny really, several of the MAJOR US wholesale suppliers in business today imitated our concept (which happens ALL THE TIME in business). It always ruffles my feathers a bit, but I understand that this is business
I can’t stop someone from riding our coattails, but I CAN continue to develop my ideas and continue creating….thank goodness!
Over the past weekend (4th of July), I helped my mother at a craft show up in Traverse City, MI (she still does shows and I help her occasionally). We had competition
There was a gal there that had the same basic stuff we had, but she embellished much less creatively than we do. She even copied our “set specials”, right down to the signage.
A friend of ours called the same day who was in Muskegon, MI doing the Summer Celebration craft show to let us know that someone was set up there who copied everything, right down to our table skirts. The previous weekend, a lady and her husband (fellow crafters) were literally spying in my mother’s neighbors booth at my mothers display and product. They were so desperate to memorize every detail that eventually, the lady (a crafter) actually came to my mother and openly admitted to copying our products because she saw us at a winter craft show (although at that time she had different products) and was fascinated by how our tutu’s were “flying off the racks”. Can you believe it?!
So, I guess we should be flattered right? I offer this source guide because there is a huge demand for these products. As long as little girls exist (which is infinitely) there will be a market for this product line. As for my mother and myself, we continue to take it up a notch, keep creating, and keep a watchful eye on trend forecasting. We have to because our concepts and your concepts will always be imitated. The key is to not let them be duplicated!
