Believe me, I’m no cleaning expert, but when I found these natural and non-toxic cleaners for just a few bucks, I had to try them out. I have listed my top three favorite green cleaners that are wonderful alternatives to toxic and costly cleaning chemicals, and they get the job done just as well. Did I mention you’ll save money in the process while keeping toxins out of your house? It’s true.
Opt for Olive Oil When Working With Wood.
Instead of reaching for toxic and costly furniture polish, head for the kitchen and get a few drops of olive oil. While it’s good on bread, it’s also great on furniture, hardwood floors and kitchen items such as cutting boards or wooden spoons.
I have an ancient rocking chair that I feel obligated to keep looking its best, and I spent so much time trying to find out what polish would be best for it. I decided to try olive oil first, and I was really surprised how the oil simply brought out its features and did what I needed it to do. I avoided bringing new toxic chemicals into the house, and I saved a few bucks in the process. It’s funny how that works out, you know?
Use White Vinegar for Cleaning Harder Stains and Deodorizing Just About Anything.
I’ll admit, I didn’t know what you would use white vinegar for anyway. I had used it once to clean out valves on my steam heating system and it worked great. This stuff, obtained for under a dollar, can be used to chew up all kinds of tough grime that you’d otherwise pay more to use toxic chemicals on.
Instead of wasting money on a bottle of crappy Drano or Liquid Plumr, try using white vinegar to clean your drains. My house is over a hundred years old, so the water pressure and drainage aren’t the best. I’ve even been told that using a strong chemical to clean the drains could destroy the pipes. So I put a cup of white vinegar in the drain each month and let it sit for a few hours…definitely makes a difference. If you combine white vinegar with baking soda, you can also create a good cleaning agent for stains of surfaces such as a linoleum floor. It’s really simple, just let it sit there for a while before rinsing the area clean with water. The stuffreally works wonders, so get into it.
Reach for Club Soda When Dealing With Tough Stains.
Club soda, I’ve never thought to use it for anything but mixed drinks. What do you know, it’s great for a number of hard cleaning jobs and even watering the plants.
Club soda is great for all kinds of around the house tough jobs. Whether you’re removing rust or cleaning jewelry, club soda has you covered. I like club soda the best since I recently got into gardening a bit more. I’ve used it to loosen up rusty hinges on the doors of my rickety old house, then dump it on my plants for a healthy mineral bath. Now I can’t claim that club soda is the sole reason why my plants are huge, but between that and my compost, my plants love me. Did I mention how cheap this stuff is? Get some.
It’s pretty simple: between the three aforementioned natural cleaning products, you’re saving money and getting the job done without the toxic chemicals. I’ve gone from having close to a dozen different cleaners in the house to merely three. Even better, I bought all three for less than a bottle of drain cleaner. It doesn’t get much better than that.
