Jewellery Making Question?

Does anyone know where I can get some small samples of different wires of different gauges? I’m new to jewellery making and I’m not sure what kind of wire and what size gauge I need for certain projects etc. I want to make a small round ring for my first project but I’m not sure what kind of wire or what size gauge I need?

my metalsmithing instructor always had us make our first projects out of copper before going to silver. its cheaper to make mistakes and fine fabrication problems when using copper. then you can go to silver. you can buy copper wire at lowes or home depot, they have all different guages and it is not to expensive.
